A Proverbs 31 Warrior's Creed

DAY 1 OF 4

Feeling daunted by the virtuous woman in Proverbs 31? You’re not alone. But don't let those feelings of inadequacy hold you back. God's high standard is an invitation to rise higher, and He provides the grace to do His good pleasure. Adapted from my book A Proverbs 31 Warrior's Creed: 50 Devotions to Elevate Your Spiritual Intelligence and Win the Fight for Your Family, this four-day devotional captures the fundamental practices of a Proverbs 31 warrior powering her territorial influence inside and outside her home.

She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. Proverbs 31:26 (KJV)

The tongue is a powerful tool for regulating our realm. James 3:6-12 (NKJV)says: And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and it is set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it, we bless our God and Father, and with it, we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.

The natural man cannot tame the tongue. It takes supernatural power to tame the tongue. A Proverbs 31 warrior masters her tongue and regulates her sphere of influence with words and divine wisdom through the following practices:

  • Meditation: This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success - Joshua 1:8 (NKJV). Through meditation, we bind our tongues to the law and power of the Holy Spirit. As we meditate in the Word by speaking and pondering the Word of God, which is Spirit and Life, we begin to think and speak life. As we speak and think life, we bind our tongues to the law of kindness.
  • Yielding the tongue to the Holy Spirit: Intimacy with the Holy Spirit empowers us to dominate the flesh, manifesting the divine nature of kindness. But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, and faithfulness (Galatians 5:22). Speaking in tongues and inviting the Holy Spirit to give us utterance daily are ways to yield the tongue to the Holy Spirit (Mark 16:17; John 14:26; Ephesians 6:19)

Practice

Make this declaration at least 100 times today: I OPEN MY MOUTH WITH WISDOM. IN MY TONGUE IS THE LAW OF KINDNESS.
