What Guides Your Life?
Do we let the Spirit guide our life, or are we guided by our flesh? Whether we realize it or not, every decision we make about our life reflects how we live and what guides our life. In Romans 8:13, we are reminded that we battle death all the time, even though we may live a comfortable life.
Living according to the flesh is certain death, but Paul points out that the opposite of living according to the flesh is life. When we live by the Spirit of God, we put to death the deeds of the body. Our physical nature is contrary to God (Romans 8:7). It will not easily die. That is why we can’t overcome the flesh passively. Either we are killing the flesh or the flesh is killing us.
So, how does killing our flesh make us an heir with God? We pay our debt by living by the Spirit each day. We're free to fight for others, and we can be a blessing to others even when our flesh tempts us to fight solely for ourselves. Helping others get a notch closer to Jesus, in the marketplace or in our local community, helps us to be more like Him, more like a co-heir. And we can lay our needs aside because we know that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us (Romans 8:26).
