Heirs of God

DAY 1 OF 6

Debtors to the Spirit

God is in charge and the Holy Spirit leads and directs us. It manages us, much like a work manager would manage how well we do our job. In the case of the Spirit of God, our job is to discipline our flesh (1 Corinthians 9:27) so that we can do what God wants us to do.

We have to discipline our flesh because we are in debt to the Spirit. Paul reminds us in Romans 8:12 that as believers, we owe the Holy Spirit a lot. Being in debt to the Spirit means that we are servants (workers) of God. The special thing about being in debt to the Spirit is that we are now heirs with Christ. Followers of Christ get to live like we belong to a family. We’re now saved. We’re now free to love others. We’re now able to live in the freedom that only comes when we are not subjected to the flesh.

However, we can’t do whatever we want, so we should pray constantly to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to us what He would have us do. And let’s not just ask; let’s obligate ourselves to do it. Living as a marketplace missionary is a life of doing things we don’t always want to do. But we choose to be inconvenienced in the same way that Jesus was inconvenienced for our sins so that we can live free from our flesh.
