Living Water
Numbers 20:7-12
“The Lord said to Moses, ‘Take the staff…Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water…’ So Moses took the staff from the Lord’s presence…Moses said to them [the assembly], ‘Listen you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?’ Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out…But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, ‘Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.” [an issue of authority]
Sometimes the pressures and weight of ministry cause us to forget that we are totally dependent on God for everything. We can begin to rely on ourselves, our own gifts or abilities, or even on methods God used in the past, rather than trust in God’s provision and direction for today. Moses’ anger caused him to strike the rock rather than speak to it. 1 Corinthians 10:4 tells us that the rock that accompanied Israel was Christ, the source of living water. For that reason the priests poured out water at the Feast of Tabernacles (John 7), and Jesus declared that he was that living water.
Will we trust Christ for all things?
Lord Jesus, you are my living water, and my life.
