Listening To The Word - 1 YearSample
Deceptive Diligence
John 5:39, 40, 44
“You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life…How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?”
Jesus confronted religious systems and thinking that found security in their study of Scriptures and the pride that comes from good scholarship. Such pride, and self-righteousness of scholarship as an end in itself, was supported by a community of scholars who found mutual acceptance to be of greater value than God’s acceptance. Things haven’t changed much! There is life in Jesus - in knowing him, serving him and obeying him. When theological education is not focused on knowing, following, worshipping and dying for Jesus, it has lost its way.
Lord Jesus, I repent for my pride, and the false security of academic achievement apart from you. You alone are life!
