Words and Actions
2 Samuel 19:43
“Then the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, ‘We have ten shares in the king; and besides, we have a greater claim on David than you have. So why do you treat us with contempt? Were we not the first to speak of bringing back our king? But the men of Judah responded even more harshly than the men of Israel.”
This was a surreal turn of events in David’s leadership journey. The ten tribes of Israel were defending their loyalty toward David and protesting that they had a greater claim to David’s kingship than the tribe of Judah from which David came. This shouting match, protesting loyalty, came just days after all the tribes participated in Absalom’s rebellion against David. It appears that the greater the rebellion, the louder they protested their loyalty. What mattered then, as now, are our actions, not just our words.
Our King Jesus is in exile with his return promised.
Do we protest our devotion in worship on Sundays and then live in rebellion against his rule in our hearts throughout the week?
It is our action of loyalty and walking with Jesus, regardless of the cost, which matters more than our words protesting our devotion.
Lord Jesus, I pray my actions and my words declare devotion and faithfulness to you this day, for your glory.
