Leadership in the Kingdom
1 Chronicles 22:12-13
“May the Lord give you discretion and understanding when he puts you in command over Israel, so that you may keep the law of the Lord your God. Then you will have success if you are careful to observe the decrees and laws that the Lord gave Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged.”
Why did David essentially repeat the same leadership charge that Moses gave Joshua in Joshua 1:7-9?
These were the essential terms of the first covenant Moses received from God. Leadership of Israel required knowing and obeying this covenant.
Are there essential requirements for leadership today in the kingdom of God under the new covenant of Jesus Christ?
The first requirement must be salvation through faith in the finished work of Christ on the cross on our behalf. This ‘narrow gate’ requires that we repent for our sin and our life of self and choose to surrender our will to the will of the Father. Discretion and understanding come through humility and a surrendered will. Leadership in Christ’s kingdom must live in humility under Christ’s authority. Our strength is in the Lord and the power of his Spirit at work within us. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. We have not been given a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline. The living presence of Jesus within us will serve and lead through us as we yield to him.
Lord Jesus Christ, you are my sufficiency. All I need for life and service in your kingdom is found in you. Fill me with your Spirit again today that I might know and do your will, for your glory.
