Mighty Men and Women of Faith
1 Chronicles 11:6, 11
“David had said, ‘Whoever leads the attack on the Jebusites will become commander-in-chief.’ Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, and so he received the command…this is the list of David’s mighty men:”
Matthew 14:16-17, 28-29
“Jesus replied, ‘They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.’ ‘We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish…’ ‘Lord, if it’s you…tell me to come to you on the water.’ ‘Come,’ he said.”
How are mighty men and women of faith developed?
David’s mighty men came from all the regions and clans of Israel.
What qualified them to be called “mighty men”?
Joab won the command of the army by leading the attack on Jerusalem with bravery and courage. This was not a popularity contest. In Christ’s disciple-making, he encouraged faith-building experiences. The feeding of the five thousand began with a request, “You feed them…” Peter, walking on water, began with an invitation, “Come”. Faith is developed through risk-taking obedience. Mighty men and women of faith are developed, not just discovered.
Lord Jesus, I want to be one of your mighty men of faith. I too want to live in the power of your Spirit, doing “greater things than these,” for your glory.
