Daily Encouragement

DAY 354 OF 366

There are other grounds for the assurance of our salvation, which is nothing less than a passing from death to life. However, the assurance which comes out of fellowship with other believers is particularly encouraging.

We can all think with affection of groups of Christians, large and small, with whom we have met. We can give thanks for individuals who have strengthened us in the faith. In their company - even at the mere memory of it - we inevitably give thanks that we share a common life in the family of God.

There are incidents which bring home this happy truth to our hearts. I remember unpacking my kit-bag on a ship at Trincomalee in Sri Lanka during the Second World War. Out came my by Bible.

“Are you a Bible-pusher? asked a fellow standing near by.
“If you mean a Christian, yes” I replied.
“There’s another aboard this ship,” the man informed me.
“Really? would you do me a favor and lead me to him?”

And he did. My stay on board was brief, but what a joy it was to meet that brother, who had been without fellowship for some time. What an encouraging time we had together. We had never met before. We have never met again. However, we were immediately one because we were one in Christ, and we rejoiced together in “our common salvation.”
