Our Lord lays it down as axiomatic that “No servant can serve two masters,” and then gives this important practical application: “You cannot serve both God and Money.”

It is a warning we do well to heed, for many people believe you can serve both masters. The Pharisees certainly did. They combined religion and money in a big way and they heard this teaching of Jesus with a sneer. They “loved money,” we read. It is no wonder that they did not love the Lord.

The temptation to attempt the impossible touches not only the man out in the world, where Mammon is high in the hierarchy of gods, but also the preacher in the pulpit and the missionary in his distant land. There are still those “who think that godliness is a means to financial gain” (1 Tim. 6:5).

This word from our Lord is to be acted upon. We must serve God, and our money must be our servant. We must be “trustworthy in handling worldly wealth,” using it wisely so that our chief gain will be treasure in heaven.

There is encouragement here. Money will take its rightful place if we serve the Lord with all our hearts. Loving him will keep us from falling into the trap of loving wealth (1 Tim. 6:9-10).
