Daily Encouragement

These words are brimming over with encouragement.

Our Lord deals with us personally. He knows our names as well as he knew Simon Peter’s - “He calls his own sheep by name” (John 10:3).

Satan cannot touch us without the Lord’s permission. He had to ask to smite Job, and he has to ask to sift Peter. “Even when the Devil works his worst,” remarked Luther, “he remains God’s Devil.”

The Lord is our great High Priest who “is able to help those who are being tempted” (Heb. 2:18). No help is more effective than his prayer (Luke 7:25). In his prayer he concentrates on our faith, for faith is the one essential, and he expects us to trust in him. His prayer is answered, as with Peter. Everything else failed, but his faith did not fail. When “the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter” (Luke 22:61), Peter was looking his way. And that is the essence of faith - having one’s face turned towards the Lord, come what may.

The Lord can make even our experience of failure a blessing to others - “When you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” All is not in vain if we return from the denials, curses and bitter tears with a testimony of love we have seen in the eyes of the Lord.
