Daily Encouragement

DAY 125 OF 366

This is the experience of one who has made the Most High his dwelling. Here is sublime peace and safety and satisfaction. What better picture is there of the life to which the gospel calls us? “Come unto me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matt. 11:28).

But in a sense it is a double life. “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High” must at the same time face life’s snares, plagues and pestilence. He cannot avoid its conflicts or its crisis hours when “the great lion and the serpent” appear. He is in the world but not of it (John 17:15-16). he lives in an earthly place, but he truly dwells in Christ (Col. 1:2) and his real citizenship is in heaven (Phil. 3:20).

“We are to walk the dusty ways of life as to be ever in the secret place of the Most High,” says Alexander Mclaren. That is to say, we are to live by the Spirit:

In his own strength thy Lord shall lead thee on.
O’rshadowed by His love, upheld by grace,
His power will keep thee through all earthly trials
until the dawn, when thou shalt see his face.
(Elizabeth H. Battram)
