This whole psalm, it has been said, is just a love-song about God’s law. Why is the Psalmist and those like him in love with the word of the Lord? Because it is the key to the blessed life: “Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord. Blessed are they who keep his statues and seek him with all their heart” (verses 1-2).

Such life rests upon a firm foundation: “Your word, O Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens” (verse 89).

Such life walks in the light: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path” (verse 105).

Such life is free: “I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free” (verse 32) - free not least from sin: “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (verse 11).

Such life enjoys the peace of God: “Great peace have they who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble (verse 165).

Such life knows the comfort of God’s love: “May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise to your servant” (verse 76).

No wonder that those who live this life love God’s word and meditate upon it!
