Binge Free God's Way

DAY 6 OF 7

Day 6

Fully Surrender

One beautiful fall Saturday morning, I had the house to myself, a nice time praying and reading my Bible followed by a refreshing walk. I thanked God for how much freedom I was feeling in the area of food.

Then the phone rang. My friend and I caught up for a few minutes, before she started telling me how she and a few friends had gotten together for dinner the night before. One of her girlfriends was restricting her food because she wanted to lose weight and get off sugar.

Oh, no here we go, I thought. As she was filling me in about the details of her friend’s new eating plan, she began to list the foods she was restricting to lose weight. Throughout the night, her friend only placed one meatball on her plate.

Halfway through this conversation, my stomach began to turn. Tension built up in my shoulders. I needed to get off the phone, because I was in a vulnerable spot with my own journey.

I was learning to surrender everything to God: my weight, all the fad diets, and food rules that I put on myself for years. This new found freedom I was exploring was not a license to stuff my face with whatever I wanted to—in fact it was the total opposite. It was about learning to trust myself around food and teach myself how to fuel my body with foods that work well for me.

After being in torment for so long, hostage to binge-eating behaviors, I needed to surrender this area of my life to God and do what He was guiding me to do. It took a very long time to sort through the right solution to combat my unhealthy relationship with food and my body. To have a true transformation, I had to stop counting and obsessing over every little thing that went into my mouth. This was about healing from the inside out and learning to make eating healthy a part of my life.

Right now, you might be thinking that food is your only problem. I get it. I did, too. But constantly obsessing about calories, what to eat, and what not to eat is a lot unhealthier than you think. Instead of focusing on what the number on the scale says, let’s start focusing on emotions and thought patterns that have kept us stuck for so long. It’s time to not just change the way you eat, but learn to surrender all your fears, self-hate, and unforgiveness towards yourself and others to Jesus.

Daily Affirmation

One day at a time. One meal at a time. One prayer at a time.

Action Steps

It’s time to make peace with your body and with food. Stop and ask yourself what that would look like for you. Take a moment and get honest with yourself. Write down the behaviors that are getting in your way and preventing you from getting healthy. If you are not sure, pray about it and ask God to show you. Make a list of things in the past that worked and things that did not work for you.
