The Loudest Voice
Have you ever considered how many voices you listen to every day? As a blind person, I rely a lot on voices. Some voices give directions or answer questions. Some voices whisper about me, whether I’m going to run into the wall or if I actually do my own makeup. Other voices of social media and our culture try to dictate how we should dress or act and what causes should be most important to us. The voices that seem to get most of my attention are the ones whispering doubts and lies in my head. “You’re not good enough.” “You don’t have what it takes to be loved.”
Have you noticed how easy it is for these voices to become so loud we no longer hear God speaking love and truth to us? Do you find yourself asking, “How can I hear God’s voice?”
We learn to hear and know God’s voice and heart in the same way we know any trusted friend’s voice. We listen. We ask questions. We spend time.
We can’t sit across from God at a coffee shop or FaceTime Him, but we can discover Him in the ways He has opened to us. He speaks through His Word, so we read and listen. When we pray, we talk to Him, learn what is important to Him and hear what He says about us. Jesus taught His followers that His words were like seeds planted in the soil. They could only take root in open hearts, eager to receive them. God’s voice spoke the World into being; and in the New Testament Jesus’ voice healed the sick, calmed the waters, challenged listeners to think, and raised the dead. His Word tells us from beginning to end that He’s longing for us to let His voice be loudest in our lives.
