Theology for Everybody: Romans

ڕۆژی348 لە 365

Paul writes about going to visit Rome. He mentions no sights he’s going to see in Rome, but he mentions the people he looks forward to seeing. Rome is a magnificent city, but the apostle doesn’t seem nearly as concerned about the city as he is about God’s people living there. The city of Rome at that time was the center of the Roman Empire, the largest and most powerful empire on the planet. They had an incredible military. They overtook disparate nations and people groups and conquered them. And then, they would bring what was called Pax Romana, or “Roman peace,” through their strong military. They also created the Roman road system. Have you ever heard the old saying, “All roads lead to Rome”? The Romans built the equivalent of the first highway system, and all roads really did lead to Rome.

Rome was a city of about a million people. It was the center and the crown jewel of the Roman Empire. In addition, it was built on a river, meaning there was lush farmland and many crops. They had plenty of fresh food, fruits, vegetables, and. livestock. They had the finest wine and choicest meats.

The city was so magnificent. It was a tourist Mecca, and everybody wanted to go there because it was the best place to be. In addition to great restaurants and nightlife, they had gambling and entertainment. They had chariot races, plays, and concerts. One of their stadiums seated 150,000 people. After 2,000-plus years, Rome still exists, and it’s still a tourist site for people worldwide.

Paul is going to Rome. He has been trying to get there for years. He looks forward to seeing God’s people most because that is where the blessing is. Jesus died and rose for people. That must mean people are His highest priority; therefore, they should be our highest priority.

I have been all over the world. I’ve had a great life of great blessing and great provision. I’ve been to and preached in over a dozen nations, including Greece, Israel, and Turkey. Domestically, I’ve preached in maybe three dozen states. I’ve been to many amazing places, but my favorite memories are not the places I’ve been. My favorite memories are of the people I have met. When you get with God’s people full of the Holy Spirit, it’s like a family reunion because it is a family reunion. God is your Father, and He is their Father too. They are your brothers and sisters.

Today’s Reflection

What amazing places have you been to, and what incredible people have you met?
