The War on Wisdom

DAY 27 OF 35

One of the most important responsibilities of a parent is to teach a child to obey. The hope however is to teach obedience from a place of love, not fear. God desires this for us too. God intended us to live at peace with Him and keep His commandments in order to keep our lives.

Just as a parent will put certain rules in place in their home, rules that are intended to bring safety and comfort to their children and set boundaries wherein there is opportunity for freedom and life, God gives us rules too. It is the same with God as with any loving parent: obedience to His word and the commandments He gave have a real, practical benefit to us. Through obedience we guard and keep our lives. Obedience to God not only has practical benefits, but it safely keeps our hearts and souls.

Unfortunately, in many cases our earthly parents may have got it wrong. We as parents may currently be getting it wrong. In our weakness and sin, we can try to teach obedience from a place of control and fear rather than from a place of freedom and life. Thankfully we have the perfect example to learn from.

Once we realize that obedience is freeing rather than oppressing, we can begin to move to a place of trusting God - trusting that He has our best interest at heart. His intentions can only be pure. Although earthly parents may fail, God our Heavenly Father does not. We can rest in the security that His commandments are there to bring us life and life in abundance.
