On Guard Against Greed
Luke 12:15
“Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
Greed, the desire for wealth or possessions in increasing measure, turns our hearts and our focus onto Mammon, a spiritual power. The call to “watch out,” and to “be on your guard,” indicates that we are in a battle. There is an enemy of our souls looking to capture our hearts. Mammon was and is the spiritual power of greed. Jesus said we can’t serve both God and Mammon. Mammon desires to control our thoughts, our values and our priorities, and convince us that we can find life in serving him. Jesus said that our life will not come from how much we own. We find freedom from the power of greed (Mammon) by generously giving to God. Generosity breaks the power of greed and makes us grateful for all God has provided. He is our source, and life comes from God alone.
Lord Jesus, thank you that you have provided all we need and so much more. You are my life and my source. Thank you that you have enriched my soul. Keep my eyes on you and deliver me from any influence of Mammon.
