DAY 14 OF 365

A Way of Escape

Genesis 35:2-3, 5
“So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, ‘Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes. Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me on the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone’…the terror of God fell upon the towns all around them so that no one pursued them.”

With the rape of Dinah and the subsequent revenge killings of all males in Shechem, Jacob’s family was in a critical predicament. We sometimes find ourselves in challenging circumstances, perhaps not as dramatic as Jacob’s, but we too wonder if there is a way out. Jacob’s response was to call on the Lord and return to the last place he had met God – at Bethel. Jacob’s response was to call his family to purity and freedom from all other gods. Without purity we won’t experience God’s presence. The terror of God fell upon the towns allied with Shechem that could have attacked Jacob’s family. The way out is always to humble ourselves before God and let him lead us. God’s presence is enough.

Lord Jesus, I humble myself before you and seek your face this day. Thank you that you always provide a way of escape from temptation and attacks.
