Real Hope: Victory

Dia 4 de 5

The Great Day Coming

I love that at Easter we get the space of a long weekend to feel a range of emotions – and not just the joy found in eating chocolate. I’m thankful that here in Australia we have a long weekend to free ourselves of the usual pace of life so we can spend time feeling the heartbreak of Good Friday right through to feeling the joy of the victory that comes as Jesus rises to life on Resurrection Sunday. In 1 Corinthians 15, we read of the sure hope that all who trust in Jesus share – that though we are mortal, we will be raised to live forever.

I was recently reading a book that was talking about aging and life expectancy. It said that back in 1831, the average global life expectancy was a mere 29 years (40 if you lived in the UK). Due to a number of advancements, by 2000 the average life expectancy was 66. Now we know that this number will change greatly from country to country, but no matter what it may be – it shows that our bodies are frail. Life is transient. Try as we might to slow down death – our bodies will always eventually fail us.

And this is why the victory of Easter is such good news. I have heard it said that ‘Easter has become our annual dress rehearsal for that great coming Day’ where Jesus – our victor – will return. No longer will death have its hold on us, nor sickness, nor pandemics, nor isolation, nor life expectancy – for we will be raised eternal. For those who trust in Jesus, this is the best news.
