The Danger of Addictions

We are called to give our body to God as a living sacrifice, to offer up all that we are, clean and holy, to the very best of our ability. This sacrifice is applicable to every area of our lives, and our physical bodies are no exception.

Addictions and dependence on anything to excess is dangerous. For instance, our bodies require food to exist but choosing to harm your body by abusing food is a sin. Prescription drugs, when used appropriately and as directed, are beneficial, but misused they become a conduit for destroying health. Alcoholism will not only destroy your body, but erode relationships, wreck finances, and end careers. Sleep deprivation and functioning only on adrenaline highs are serious health compromising behaviors.

Consider the serious health and life consequences these types of destructive choices produce. Then ask yourself if it’s respectable or responsible to mistreat the body God gave you and then offer it back to him as a broken mess.

Kicking bad habits and overcoming addictions can be a long and difficult path, but it absolutely can be done. With God all things are possible! If you have an issue tugging at your heart and health, reach out for help. Seek the advice and guidance from trusted counsel, visit your doctor, join a support group, enlist friends to hold you accountable, and pray to God for his strength, wisdom, encouragement, and will.

What will you declutter? Harmful, destructive behaviors, negative health consequences, disobedience to God, regret, and shame.
