Trusting and Believing: Devotions From Time of Grace

DAY 13 OF 34

Why Is It so Hard to Trust God?
Self-Sufficiency

“Every day, in every way, I am becoming better and better.” Steady repetition of this phrase is how French psychotherapist Émile Coué taught people at his clinic in Nancy to will themselves into a better future. This type of autosuggestion came to be called “Couéism” and found many followers.

People want badly to believe that the world is steadily evolving into a higher state. Science fiction novels and movies sometimes portray ideal societies where people have progressed beyond the need for violence and war.

It is a wonderful thing to be self-sufficient and to work at bettering yourself. It is a terrible thing, though, to suppose that we don’t need God. We are not evolving into better people. If anything, people are slowly devolving into beasts.

There’s a better way. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” is the wise counsel from Proverbs 3:5. Every day in every way we are loved and blessed by our dear Father, Savior, and Counselor. Why Is It so Hard to Trust God?
