Believe it or not, singleness is a gift from God. I will repeat it to reiterate the point, and this time, read it slowly. Singleness is a gift from God. See, that wasn’t so bad now. Seriously, Paul informs us in 1 Corinthians 7 that singleness, like marriage, is a gift. One of the issues we face is that we do not value the gift of singleness. Many of us don’t even consider it to be a gift.
Therefore, we must renew our minds to be content with where we are. But don’t just take my word for it; check out 1 Corinthians 7:17 in the message version which says: “And don’t be wishing you were someplace else or with someone else. Where you are right now is God’s place for you. Live and obey and love and believe right there. God, not your marital status, defines your life. Don’t think I’m being harder on you than on the others. I give this same counsel in all the churches.”
Observing this passage in The Message translation shows the value of contentment in singleness. You must recognize and appreciate that where God has you is precisely where He desires you to be. This season of singleness is a gift that God has intentionally given you. However, we often mistakenly place our value in our relationship status. The Message translation reminds us that God, not our marital status, defines our lives. This is an important reminder when you feel down about your relationship status.
While you may see your friends or people posting engagement photos or happy family pictures on social media, remember that where you are is where God has you, and He defines your life—not your marital status. Be honest with God about your desires; while you may want to be married, right now, God has given you the gift of singleness. I believe that as you begin to express gratitude, praise, and find contentment in Him for A) who He is and B) the gift of singleness, the pressure and feelings of comparison will be lifted.
In summary, remember that the Word of God tells us that singleness is a gift. Honor and appreciate this gift.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for the gift of singleness. Thank you for reminding me that my value is found in you and not my marital status. Forgive me for not always viewing this season as a gift from you. I choose to trust you with my relationships. In Jesus’ name, amen.
