Full Armor of God

DAY 6 OF 7

Salvation Is Your Helmet

The helmet of salvation is mentioned in Ephesians 6:17, as well as two other places in Scripture. God himself is the first to wear it. In the Old Testament, “He . . . placed the helmet of salvation on his head” (Isa. 59:17 NLT). What this tells me is that the helmet we put on is not our own. Salvation isn’t something we earn or invent. Instead it’s something always and only given to us by God.

In the second mention Paul tells us to live, “wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation” (1 Thess. 5:8 NLT). Yes, this confidence in our salvation is about eternal hope, but the armor of God passage in Ephesians is clearly about the here and now, about the battlefield we find ourselves on today.

When we’re confident in God’s love for us, we can come to him in the middle of the battle, in the hardest places. We can tell him what concerns us and trust he will take care of us. We can live in gratitude because we know he is faithful. Then his peace will guard our minds—even in the midst of all-out war.

We need a defense for our minds, and God offers us one. We don’t have to let worry or fear win today. Oh, this doesn’t mean it will be easy. We’re talking about a battle after all. About fighting hard. About sometimes getting knocked down. God understands this, but he also knows the identity and destiny he’s given us. We are not worriers; we are warriors.

God, you are the one who gives me salvation for eternity and what I need now too. Amen.

What battle are you fighting in your mind that you need God’s help with today?
