Your Faith Is a Shield

When I looked closer at the elements of ancient shields, I saw God so present throughout each layer. First, the shield itself was made out of wood. When we take up the shield of faith, we are placing ourselves behind the protection and redemption of the cross, who Jesus is, and what he has done on our behalf.

Then the wood was covered by leather, by animal skins—a reminder of sacrifice. God gave his only Son on our behalf, and it is this sacrifice that saves us.

The leather of the shield was frequently rubbed down with oil or soaked in water, which was the invisible secret to extinguishing flaming arrows. This sounds a lot like anointing and baptism, both of which are related to the Holy Spirit. It is the truth imparted to us by the Spirit that quenches the fiery arrows that the enemy shoots at us—the lies, accusations, and temptations.

Taking up the shield of faith means simply placing our trust in who God is and what he has done for us. When an ancient soldier was under the most intense attack, the best position to be in was on his knees. That’s when the shield was most effective because in that position it covered the entire soldier. This is the battle-winning secret: when we don’t have the strength or will or wisdom to fight, we don’t have to; we only need to be still and let God cover us.

God, help me to take up the shield of faith and trust you today. Amen.
