Lent Journey

DAY 37 OF 39

DAY 37
Surrender

In his last moments, Jesus knows that He did what He had to and could do, and that He can now let go.

This is his moment of total surrender. It is finished.

He dies in peace. In no way does He try to take control in those moments. What the disciples do next, or what the people and rulers do next, does not affect Him any more. Whatever they do is now left up to them. Even the grave He does not try to control. No ego drama controls Jesus‘ behaviour.

To totally surrender is an art. It is also not simply something waiting at the end of my life. Life continually invites me to surrender – something that I do at times, with difficulty, or not at all. But I can grow in this. When I come to the end of my life, I want to do it like Jesus who looks back and says that it is finished. I want to prepare myself for that now.

Life is what it is. Things come my way over which I have little control: illness, death of loved ones, big losses . . . The list of everything that have already come my way goes on and on, and the future will be no different. Events like these have the potential to awaken feelings of powerlessness, insecurity, fearfulness and anxiety in me.

However, I want to learn to see the bigger spiritual potential in everything. It is true that the old way of doing things could come to an end – and my choice can change my fundamental orientation to life.

God is in control. I know that and surrender. He makes everything work together for good!

EXERCISE
• When you pray today, think about your life and the areas where you are invited to surrender.
• Which areas invite you to say: It is finished?
• Talk to God about it and surrender to Him.
