Our Security for Eternity - the Gospel of John নমুনা
Read: John 21
SOAP: John 21:24–25
This is the disciple who testifies about these things and has written these things, and we know that his testimony is true. There are many other things that Jesus did. If every one of them were written down, I suppose the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.
It may seem strange that the final words of the Gospel of John are about the author rather than Jesus. However, John’s final words explain to the reader why he can be trusted when he says Jesus is the Son of God and the only way to eternal life. Throughout this Gospel account, there are many contrasts between John, the author of this Gospel, and Peter. While it may appear to us as condescending to refer to himself as “the disciple Jesus loved,” John’s intention was not to elevate himself for the sake of pride, but rather for proving his reliability as a witness to the risen Christ.
During Jesus’ final meal with His disciples, John sat next to Jesus and leaned against His chest, while Peter sat across the table (13:23–25). After Jesus’ arrest, Peter remained in the courtyard while John went into the house with Jesus (18:15–16). Peter denied Jesus that night while John remained with Him even up to the moment of His death (18:27; 19:27). When Mary told them the news, Peter and John ran to the place He was buried. John ran faster than Peter and believed while Peter did not understand what had taken place (20:2–9). And during their final fishing trip, John was the first to recognize Jesus on the shore (21:7).
The contrast between the two disciples is not meant to be a slight to Peter, for He is restored by Jesus, not condemned. Peter was the one Jesus commanded to feed and shepherd His sheep. At the time this was most likely written, Peter was the leader of the church in Jerusalem. If the testimony of Peter was reliable, the testimony of this disciple, of John, was equally so.
We can believe the words of John’s Gospel to be true. He is a reliable witness to the life and work of Jesus. As we conclude our study, reflect on the reliability of John’s testimony. Do you believe these events are true? Do you believe Jesus is the Son of God and the only way to eternal life? Have you placed your faith in Him? If not, spend time examining why you may not believe. If you do believe these words, share them with others. For John’s testimony was not meant to be for only those who believe, but so the world would know that Jesus is the Son of God and that we may have life in His name!
