Our Security for Eternity - the Gospel of John নমুনা
Read: John 20:19–31
SOAP: John 20:31
But these are recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
As we come to the end of the Gospel of John, we find that our author gave us a clear explanation of his reasons for writing this book. He chose specific events in the life and ministry of Jesus, organized them in a theological argument so that any who read his words would believe that Jesus is the Son of God and have life in His name.
Throughout this Gospel, we find many testimonies about who Jesus is. Some came from those who believed in Him, including John the Baptist, Jesus’ disciples, and a Samaritan woman. Those who witnessed the miraculous signs Jesus performed became witnesses to the world of who He is. Jesus even testified about Himself, saying He is the Bread of Life, the Light of the World, the Door, the Good Shepherd, the Resurrection, and the Life, the Way and the Truth and the Life, and the true Vine.
All these claims and testimonies allow John’s audience to know who Jesus is and, in response, believe in Him and have eternal life. The disciples who were witnesses to these events believed—for they had seen all Jesus had done. The disciples were reliable witnesses because Jesus revealed Himself to them in ways He did not reveal Himself to the world. They saw Him after His resurrection and testified that He had risen indeed.
John’s Gospel was written for two audiences. First, those who do not believe Jesus is the Son of God and the only way to eternal life can read John’s Gospel and find the truth. They can hear a reliable witness from John and the other disciples of why Jesus is who He says He is. Second, John wrote his Gospel to believers in Christ so they would be strengthened in their faith. The recorded private ministry of Jesus is a testament to His love and care for those who believe in Him.
The Gospel of John is a masterpiece, written by someone who had no formal literary training. We see the inspiration of the Holy Spirit through every word. With the help of the Holy Spirit, John composed this work of art to witness to the world of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, so that all who read it may find life in His name.
