Our Security for Eternity - the Gospel of John

DAY 37 OF 42

Read: John 18:1–19:42

SOAP: John 18:36

Jesus replied, “My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my servants would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish authorities. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.”

As we’ve seen throughout this study, the Gospel of John offers a different perspective on the life and ministry of Jesus than the other three Gospel accounts. John chose to recount specific events to prove to his readers that Jesus is the Son of God and the only way to eternal life. The crucifixion narrative is no different. John presents specific moments, conversations, and actions to present Jesus as King, fully in control of what was happening to Him and willing to offer Himself as a sacrifice for the world. As it is with the rest of this Gospel, John presents a testimony of the King so we might believe in Him and have eternal life.

When Jesus and His disciples reached the garden outside of the city they were ambushed by a squad of soldiers, led by Judas, the one who betrayed Him. When Jesus revealed Himself, the soldiers fell to the ground. Jesus left with them, willingly accepting what the Father had given Him to do. When Jesus was before Annas, He remained calm while the priests and officers struck Him.

Jesus announced His kingship to Pilate during His questioning. Jesus knew His purpose was not to overthrow the government but to save the world from sin. He revealed His kingdom was not of the world, thereby submitting Himself to the authorities before Him while not surrendering any of His power and authority.

Finally, during His crucifixion, Jesus remained in control. John records that Jesus knew everything that was happening to Him. His final words on the cross show who He is. Jesus’ life was not taken from Him. He was not forced into submission, forced to die. Jesus allowed Himself to be arrested, tried, beaten, and crucified to fulfill His purpose: to die so that we might have eternal life with Him. Jesus completed His work. He fulfilled the Scriptures and showed Himself to the world. After this, He gave up His spirit. He was not killed against His will but willingly gave Himself up, willingly died in our place so we might live.

He is the true King. He is the One who offers life by His death. His kingdom is not of this world, and what a marvelous truth this is! His kingdom is eternal, and He forever sits on the throne!
