Some people get more out of their days than others. One man might organize his time and tasking down to the minute. Another may rise at 5:00 a.m. to steal an extra hour or two while the rest of the office sleeps.

Martin Luther had a time-tested method for squeezing the most out of every day. “Work, work from early till late. In fact I have so much work to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.” Luther’s approach revealed what he believed about the effectiveness of prayer. It all comes down to where you think creative power is found. I have found that my creative reservoir runs pretty shallow – a couple hot days and alarms start sounding. Drought makes my emotions brittle, my vision blurred, and my relationships strained. Prayer brings the rain that fills the reservoir. When I take time to pray, I work smarter, run longer, see clearer, lead better, love more, and cover more ground than when I’m too busy to pray.

Prayer is sharpening the saw – establishing a day’s foundation – investing in the harvest – priming the pump – logging on – powering up – tapping in. No one has been able to accomplish anything for God without it. Start with prayer that you would not finish in frustration.
