Wild Life—Start Really Livingনমুনা
Building Real Confidence
I struggle with insecurity. However—and maybe you can relate—the typical macho stuff and career success doesn’t really build confidence for me. It just wears me out.
Here’s what happens when we get this wrong. We believe the lie that we have to figure things out on our own. Then, we believe the lie that our value comes from how well we do that. Finally, in some area (marriage, health, spirituality, leadership, a job, finances, fathering, etc.) we experience a lack of confidence to win. So, we don’t play because we’re afraid we’ll find proof that we’re not valuable. At the core of this cycle is a false belief that we can discover our identities outside of God.
The real confidence-killer isn’t feeling like you can’t do something. No, confidence dies when you feel like you have to do something without God.
I was talking to my friend, Brian, about my battle and he said, “What if you spent 15 seconds every day, for a month, telling yourself God’s truth about your value?” I wasn’t sure why he was so sure of his idea, but I was sure I should stop trying to do it on my own. So, we came up with this statement:
“Your value does not increase or decrease based on what others might say or think about you. Your value comes from the ingredients God used to make and save you.”
Then, I set this statement as a daily reminder on my phone.
A few days later, I got a major compliment from an executive at work. I repeated the statement, received the compliment, but didn’t let define me. Another day, I woke up to a very personal and upset text from someone I care about. I repeated the statement, then called them on the phone with God-confidence.
More than a year later, God’s truth—distilled in this statement—still refreshes and strengthens me daily. I can find true rest in knowing my value doesn’t rise and fall with my performance. It comes from God alone.
So, what if you spent 15 seconds every day, for a month, telling yourself the truth about your value?
