 God of THIS city 

I believe God gives you geographical favor. He places you where He wants you to have influence. You might not be happy with your current placement, but you are there for a reason—for such a time as this.

I also believe that God places a desire in each of us to affect another geographical location. Maybe it’s the place you came from, or a place you’ve visited and just can’t get out of your mind. I have a friend who says, “I may have left Africa, but it will never leave me.” You may have a loved one living or working in another city or country, and your heart and prayers are there with them even though you aren’t. 

I call this “city love.” As the creator of the city, I believe God gives each one of us a deep sense of city love. 

Whatever your “city,” be it far or near, it’s a place teeming with people. And for many it can often be a lonely place. 

God created the Church to be a community of love and a place to belong. You have the unique opportunity and calling to be present in your proximity, exude peace and extend welcome to all.

And for that city far away that is also in your heart and mind—pray for it often. Support those who are there working hard to be present and ready with open arms to help the wanderers searching for home and meaning. Encourage from afar those who have been placed there “for such a time as this.” 

God, you are the God of this city…the God of every city. I pray for each of us who are trying to be a light in our community or called to penetrate cities that have banned, blocked or removed the welcome sign to Christians and the Gospel. Remind us today, and every day, that it’s not the government, but it is YOU who truly reigns. Give us the wisdom and desire to get to know the city you have given us and the strength to faithfully reflect you as we love well and act as emissaries of hope. Amen.
