Finding Strength in God's Truth When You're Feeling Helpless and Beaten Down

My worry keeps me feeling helpless.

Worry can be almost completely emotionally disabling and will beat you down like nothing else – way more than terrible circumstances. Worry is a conversation you have with yourself about things you cannot change. Prayer is a conversation you have with God about things He can change.

How do we get from worry to peace? Matthew 6:19-21,“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

You have probably heard the phrase “follow the money”. As the above scripture demonstrates, our heart is where our treasure is, and if our most important treasures are here on earth, we have built a certain habit of worry. Our treasures are not limited to money, but include whatever consumes our life and attention. Money is just one of the most common sources of our attention; whether we have it and are worried about how to keep it, or we don’t have it and are worried about how to get some.

Worry is:

  • Unreasonable: Matthew 6:25: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?”
  • Unfounded: Matthew 6:26: “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”
  • Unproductive: Matthew 6:27:“Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”
  • Unnecessary: Matthew 6:28: “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin”.
  • Ungodly: Matthew 6:31-32: “So, do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.”

Why be beaten down by something we cannot change? Rather, repent of worry; it is the opposite of trusting in the wisdom and sovereignty of our all-powerful God of Glory. If you trust Him, then you can place all your concerns into His powerful hands, and in exchange He will give you His indescribable Peace. Would you like to have the fresh wind of a worry-free life cleansing your heart?

1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

Reflection: Worry is pandemic, but totally unnecessary, because we are in God’s hands. If you have surrendered your life to Him, take the step of fully trusting in His will, goodness and faithfulness. By His very nature, He cannot fail, and if you abide in Him, He will lead you into a place of spiritual deliverance no matter what your situation is. He will NEVER leave you.
