Charm and beauty are human traits that do not last. They might earn us momentary earthly glory, but they both fade.
Consider ‘Jesus' entry into Jerusalem you just read, as the crowd shouted, “Hosanna!” laying cloaks and palm branches in His path.
This was pretty much modern-day red carpet. Had this happened in 2020, everyone would have been snapping photos, begging for selfies, just aiming to get a glimpse of Jesus so they could tell their friends, “I was there! I saw him!”
That was Sunday. Tuesday, the plot to kill Jesus began (Mark 14:1-2).
By Thursday evening, Jesus was publicly betrayed by one of His twelve, most trusted followers. He was arrested. He was put on multiple trials, shuffled between the high priest, the Sanhedrin, Herod, and Pilate.
With the exception of John, His mother, and a few other women, Jesus was abandoned by the remaining 10 disciples, who were afraid they themselves would be put to death if they hung around. And Jesus died a criminal’s death on the cross.
Talk about a turnaround.
Let’s not miss the important lesson for us: Earthly glory from charm or beauty may be glamorous, but it is also temporary. Fleeting. Fickle. Unreliable.
Jesus knew the difference. His purpose wasn’t persuaded by the glamour of the crowd. Jesus did get His real glory, but it was the result of being obedient to the point of death. And it was nothing this world could offer Him.
We see that the same sentiment exists inside the Proverbs 31 woman: “But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.”
Just like Jesus, our lasting glory is wrapped up in our obedience to God. Charm and beauty will fade, but how we live for Christ is our legacy that lasts.
God, help us to focus on the unseen and to build our legacy on what is eternal. Make us unaffected by distractions from this world, even if they hold temporary glory for us. We know that Your approval is the only approval that has authority. Fix our eyes solely on You. We love You. Amen.

Proverbs 31 is often mistaken as an unattainable job description when it's actually a character description of a woman of God's standard. Rather than seeking something worthy to do, this seven-day devotional helps us dig into this well-known passage in a new way: to passionately pursue who God purposely created us to be.
