If you had to declare your best day ever, which one would you choose? For a child, it might involve DisneyWorld; for a teen, when her crush asked her out. But what about for us grown-up types? What constitutes a “best day” now?
The day you got that promotion?
The day you married your spouse?
The day your child was born?
The day you heard the phrase, “cancer-free”?
We tend to go circumstantial when asked this question, and yet the lesson from Mary of Bethany was that the answer has nothing to do with events. We see in her rapt attention there at the feet of Jesus the picture the psalmist paints in Psalm 63: She was earnestly searching for wisdom, and she found it in Jesus’ words. She was thirsty for intimacy with her Savior, and nothing could tear her away. Her whole body longed for his presence, and so there she stayed, at his side. She could do nothing more to ensure a best day for herself than to spend it encountering Christ.
The question, for us, remains: what will constitute a “best day” in our life? Experiencing a favorable set of earthly circumstances? Or experiencing the risen Lord?
