devotional direction

To choose stillness in a world in motion is a countercultural thing, to be sure. Nature is always in motion … the passage above testifies that this is so. Earthquakes rumble, mountains crumble, oceans roar and foam. Mountains tremble, waters surge, and a river will not be stopped. The moon circles planet Earth every twenty-seven days, as the Earth yearly circles the sun.

Technology is always in motion. Signals buzz and hum 24/7 as data flies invisibly through the air.

Time is always in motion. Ever taken in a child and shaken your head: how do they grow up so fast?

The markets are always in motion, even after the evening bell.

News is always in motion, even if nobody were to log on.

All things, it seems, are in motion, including us, all the time, every day.

And yet there stands God’s exhortation, “Be still.” Such boldness, on the part of our God!

“Be still and know that I am God,” he says, and that nothing else is, by the way.

Be still as an act of rebellion—against all who wish you’d just move.

question to ponder

When will you be still in God’s presence today?
