A Generous God

Most of us, I’m sure, can think of those special moments when we’ve received a gift, especially when it’s unexpected. I remember several years ago receiving an electric massage chair as a gift, and trying it out for the first time. Apart from making my back feel great, that generous gift meant so much to me, and gave me a beautiful insight into the generous heart of my wife.

Many people benefit and even have life changing experiences from the generosity of others. Not-for-profit organisations have become increasingly common, many of which are doing great things and making real differences. Of course much of this can only happen because of the generous donations of people’s time, resources and talents.

Similarly, as Christians, God presents us with opportunities every day to show kindness through a heart of generosity. However, if we were to be honest with ourselves, generosity doesn’t always come naturally or easily. We make mental financial calculations, we argue we need to save up for a “rainy day”, we carefully think of how little time we have, and so generosity can often take a “back seat”.

This is where we need to be reminded of how incredibly generous our God is. The scale of His generosity knows no limits. God could have made the Niagara Falls to be half it’s size or less, He could have made Uluru much smaller, and He could have made our galaxy and universe way less impressive. But God chooses to demonstrate that He is radically generous.

In Psalm 103, we are encouraged to remember all the benefits and blessings that come from a personal relationship with God. We are reminded that He generously forgives all our sins, heals all our diseases, and crowns us with love and compassion. In fact we are told that His love for us is “abounding” (v.8) Talk about a generous God.

Of course, there was no greater expression of the generous heart of God, than through the giving of His beloved Son Jesus. Nothing else in all of history could ever reveal more of God’s generous love for you and all of humanity. John 3:16 tells us that God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son. So just know that even today, His hands are outstretched to you, and He is inviting you to partake of His generosity with expectation. He says in Mat 7:7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

So come to Him today with expectation in your heart, not to get whatever you want, but to receive all He wants to give you. He is a generous God.
