Battling a Scarcity Mindset

In Matthew 25:14-30, Jesus tells the story of a master who gives three servants different amounts of money (talents) to steward while he is away. Two of the servants invest wisely, doubling their talents, while the third, fearing the master’s judgment, buries his one talent. Upon the master's return, the first two servants are praised for their faithfulness and rewarded, but the third is condemned for his fear and lack of action.

The third servant’s mindset was rooted in scarcity—he saw only what he didn’t have, rather than what he was given. He feared the master’s judgment so much that he chose to bury his talent, ultimately losing out on an opportunity for growth and reward. When we focus solely on what we lack or what others have, we overlook the abundance of what we’ve been entrusted with.

In contrast, the first two servants understood that what they had been given, regardless of the amount, was valuable. They didn’t worry about the resources they lacked; they took action with what they had and trusted in the master’s expectations. Their faithfulness resulted in growth and reward.

The same can be said of the widow’s offering in Mark 12:41-44. She gave out of her poverty, but it was her heart of faith that Jesus honoured. When we step out in faith, trusting God to provide, we break free from the bondage of scarcity. Whether it’s time, talent, or treasure, God has given us everything we need to serve His Kingdom.

As believers, we are called to adopt a mindset of abundance. God has entrusted each of us with unique talents, time, and opportunities. We must trust that He has given us everything we need to fulfill His calling and that He will provide for our every need. You are enough. You have enough. Trust that God will multiply your efforts as you step forward with a willing heart. Your faithfulness, no matter how small it seems, matters deeply to God. He sees you, and He will never leave you lacking. Keep giving, keep serving, let go of scarcity, embrace abundance, and watch God’s Kingdom grow in and through you.
