At 969 years old, Methuselah lived the longest life in history. Henry Morris, the Institute for Creation Research founder, gives us insight into these lifespans and God's creation. "With the genetic and spiritual perfection of Adam and Eve and the flawless function of the environment that God had designed, man could have lived forever."

Methuselah's father, Enoch, was a prophet (see Jude 14) who walked with God and seemed to have given his son a name that indicated something big was going to happen when Methuselah died. Most scholars agree the meaning of his name hinted at a coming judgment. Methuselah died the same year as the flood!

The man who had impending doom attached to his name lived the longest, reminding us that the Lord is slow to anger and patient, "not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance." (2 Peter 3:9) Despite the wickedness upon the earth, God was merciful towards His creation and, in patience, held back the floodwaters for centuries until Methuselah's grandson built an ark.
