The Genealogy of Jesus

21天中的第21天

Nathan was the third-born child of David and Bathsheba (different from the prophet Nathan). He is mentioned a few times in the Old Testament and once in the New Testament. When Nathan is mentioned in Scripture, it is not in the context of a story or anything he accomplished. He can seem irrelevant if we fail to understand the importance of Nathan in the genealogy of Christ.

With the births of Nathan and Solomon, Christ’s genealogy splits. Solomon descends toward Mary, the earthly mother of Jesus. Nathan begins the descent towards Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus. In Jesus, these two lines come together, yet both lines descend from David.

Matthew begins his genealogy by declaring who Jesus is. “The son of David, the son of Abraham” (Matthew 1:1). Jesus was the Son of David and the Lord of David – the fulfillment of all prophecies concerning David and His kingdom. Jesus is the true King – the descendant of David who will reign on His throne forever and ever.

  1. How does Jesus’ reigning as King give you hope in hardship?
  2. What can you learn from Nathan and his role in Jesus’ genealogy?

Prayer: Thank you, God, that You are faithful to fulfill Your promises.
