The Genealogy of Jesus

Have you ever felt overlooked? Maybe your efforts as a friend went unnoticed, or maybe you were passed over for a job opportunity for which you were perfectly suited. Maybe you've felt marginalized at home, caring for sweet, high-energy littles. You might be surprised to know David can relate. (Yes, that David-shepherd, giant slayer, king, man-after-God's-own-heart)

The future king of Israel was once overlooked, just like you and I feel at times. David was many things to the people around him, but no one saw him as a king- not even his own family. Jesse, David's father, did not even ask David to appear with his brothers when Samuel, the priest, set out to choose a king from among Jesse's sons! David was the youngest (possibly annoying) brother whose job was tending the sheep. A shepherd overlooked by his family, yet chosen by God to be king of Israel. And not just any king but a king from whose line the King-of-Kings-the Messiah-would descend. What an honor. Overlooked by many, yet seen and used by God.

Just like David, we are chosen by God. Even in our seemingly ordinary, mundane days, God is preparing us for what's ahead. We may not be destined for kingship, but God has a plan for our lives and, like David, has grafted us into His family for those of us in Christ!

1. In what ways have you felt overlooked?

2. Do you project these feelings onto God?

Prayer: God, help me persevere when I feel overlooked by those around me. Thank you for seeing me.
