It is common practice for Christians to fast. However, this spiritual discipline and weapon of warfare will not yield results if we do not fast with an understanding of its potency like prophets people, priests, and kings did in the Bible. Any spiritual exercise we engage in without a revelation will ultimately lead to frustration. This plan will enhance your understanding of fasting as a spiritual practice for victorious Christian living.
Moses fasted (Exodus 24:18; Exodus 34:28; Deut. 9:9-10) . Daniel fasted (Daniel 9:3; Daniel 10:2-3; ). Elijah fasted (1 Kings 19:8). David fasted (Psalms 35:13; Psalms 69:10; Psalm 109:24). Jesus fasted and revealed that fasting is a spiritual exercise those who believe in Him must engage for spiritual growth (Matthew 4:2; Matthew 6:16-18; Matthew 17:14-21; Luke 5:35). We ought to learn from them if we want to mature in spiritual things. For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. Romans 15:4 (NKJV)
Today, let's briefly examine one of the earliest accounts of a Biblical fast by Moses, a prophet, priest, and national leader, and draw one or two lessons from it.
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write these words, for according to the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water. And He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments. Exodus 34:27-28 (NKJV)
Moses fasted to get on a higher spiritual frequency that enhanced his capacity to receive God’s words of covenant or commandments for his people. The first lesson from Moses’ experience is that fasting heightens our spiritual sensitivity, enhancing our capacity to receive God’s Word and use it to solve problems. Sin was a problem, and the Ten Commandments were given as solutions that charged us to love God and people. Matthew 22:37-40 (NKJV) says: Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
In that scripture, Jesus sums up the Ten Commandments and reveals that loving God and people are commandments we must keep to solve the sin problem responsible for all societal ills. And Jesus died for love's sake--His death and resurrection empower us to keep the commandments of love. Praise God for His extravagant expression of love! Going back to fasting, Moses was fasting when he received the Ten Commandments, the revealer of and a solution to the sin problem. When you fast, you place yourself on a spiritual frequency that allows you to identify the root cause of problems and download solutions to problems in your workplace, business, and relationships.
