Self-Deception
What is self-deception, and how does it affect our everyday leadership?
Self-deception is the destructive idea that the situations that happen to us have nothing to do with us. In difficult situations, it’s easy to pin blame rather than admit the failure might be our own fault. But ignoring responsibility can be more harmful in the long-term than the short-term setback of taking the blame.
As a leader, you are never just a bystander. You play a role in every situation. Whether you choose to lead with pride or humility is up to you. However, if people are constantly disobeying your authority, ignoring your desires, or being unresponsive to your ideas, you should consider why.
Instead of wondering whose fault it is, reflect on your own motives and attitude with an open heart and mind. You might discover you’re the one causing the problem. As a leader, you have to fight self-deception and cultivate self-awareness.
Challenge: A leader will not be blinded by self-deception. Spend time praying for God to open your eyes and heart about your blind spots.
