Pray For Your Spouse Before You Even Meet
2 Corinthians 6: 14 - "Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?"
I grew up going to church for the majority of my childhood. In college, I bounced around different denominations, churches, and more. I was spiritually lost and confused. When I turned 25, Jesus opened my eyes. He became my savior. My wife had been a believer, and she was so faithful in faith to Jesus. I had come to faith while married to her.
Unfortunately, being unequally yoked in a marriage doesn't often end happily. It usually leads to frustration, hopelessness, and sometimes, divorce. More often than not, instead of the unbeliever becoming a believer, the believing spouse must compromise. Kids get involved. The family and faith changes get too difficult to continue when tensions rise.
In the second part of our verse, it says, "For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?"
Ouch! Lawlessness? Darkness? Those are some strong words used to describe our spouse if we are indeed unequally yoked. Even worse, what if those words were describing us? What if we are the unbeliever in this equation?
For the sake of our soul, our marriage, and our family, let's stop and examine our hearts toward Christ.
If you're single or dating...
If you are currently single or dating, here's my plea to you based on our verse: do not marry an unbeliever. We are called to marry fellow believers.
This is the first step to any romantic relationship. Not humor, looks or anything else. Are they a believer?
If you're already married...
Pray for your spouse. Pray God would draw them near and open their eyes. It is only God who can do this for you. Pray that he would grant them eternal life.
Be a witness to them. Go to church, read your Bible; do everything a faithful Christian should do. Do not compromise your faith for an earthly relationship.
Teach your children the Bible. As a parent, it's your Godly duty to teach your children. If your spouse won't do it, you must be the one to do it.
