Seven Reasons to Not Fear

Do not worry for tomorrow

“Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not come into this city or shoot an arrow there, or come before it with a shield or cast up a siege mound against it.” (2 Kings 19:32)

Sennacherib, king of Assyria, did not disturb the city of Jerusalem, despite his loud boasts; he couldn't follow through on his threats. The Lord is capable of thwarting the plans of His people's enemies in the very moment they are being carried out. Even when it seems like the lion has the lamb within its grasp, the great Shepherd of the sheep can snatch away its prey. Our dire circumstances provide an opportunity for an even greater demonstration of divine power and wisdom.

In this particular situation, the fearsome enemy never even approached the city he sought to destroy. He couldn't launch a single arrow over the walls, deploy siege engines to breach the fortifications or construct earthworks to enclose the inhabitants. Perhaps in our own situations, too, the Lord will prevent our adversaries from causing us any harm. Indeed, He has the power to change their intentions or thwart their plans so completely that they willingly abandon them. Let's place our trust in the Lord and walk in His path, and He will watch over us. He will fill us with awe-inspiring praise when we witness the perfection of His deliverance.

Let's not be afraid of the enemy until he actually appears, and even then, let's put our trust in the Lord.
