What is mountain-moving faith?

According to an online dictionary, this term is an idiom. It’s a common term to describe Christians who subscribe to a confident faith. This type of faith is needed to achieve something extremely difficult. Some may even perform an act that seems impossible, particularly when love or a particular belief makes you feel determined to succeed. Mountains are symbolic of a natural fact in nature, created by God. They represent constancy, eternity, firmness, and stillness. But what is the difference between “regular faith” and “mountain moving faith”? Let’s look at scripture to find out.

Jesus used this reference when He had a teaching moment with a few disciples. Previously, Jesus predicted His death and resurrection (Matthew 16:21-28). Peter took Jesus aside and was highly opposed to Jesus’ prediction. Peter said emphatically, “This will never happen to you!” Jesus quickly rebuked him, calling Peter out, and told him he saw “things from a human perspective, not from God’s. He went on to say, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.” (Verse 24 NLT).

"Six days later, Jesus took three disciples, Peter, James, and John, up to a “high mountain” to be alone. As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed so that his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light. Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus.” (Matthew 17:1-3 NLT) Jesus gave a glimpse of His glory that would be revealed at the Resurrection. The purpose of this revelation (in part) of His heavenly glory was so that the “inner circle” could gain a greater understanding of who Jesus was. Up till now, they had only known Jesus in His human body. For sure, the Resurrection is a divinely difficult accomplishment!

Suddenly, God spoke from a cloud, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him!” (Matthew 17:5). How comforting it must’ve been after they had just heard of Jesus’ shocking news of His coming death. When they came down from the mountain, after beholding the glory of Jesus, the disciples never forgot what happened on that mountain that day. It gave the disciples the faith assurance they needed because they witnessed this miraculous event.

The importance of these events is significant, for it builds a “mountain moving faith.”
