The Resounding Echo

Too late. The women carrying spices and ointments have gone to anoint Jesus’ body for burial and yet they missed the opportunity. He is not here! He is risen!

The reality was that Jesus had already received ointment poured upon Him for His burial days before. Mary of Bethany had heard Him, sitting at His feet and listening to His words. She was prepared to anoint Him before He went to the cross. As a friend, she knew what was coming. She had cultivated a listening ear and a receptive heart to hear what other's had missed. Oddly enough, the other women’s spices and ointments were ultimately wasted because of His absence from the tomb that day. Mary’s was useful and worthwhile because it was given in His perfect timing.

It’s resurrection day! The news is spreading. He is alive! The Gospel is a message of hope because we serve a risen Savior!

“And truly, I say to you, wherever the Gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.”
Mark 14:9

Mary of Bethany’s story is being proclaimed today throughout the world because of Jesus’ promise. Her act of devotion accompanies the Gospel because her response to Jesus is the response we should all have towards the Gospel: giving everything to Jesus for the sake of loving Him and not just pouring out a few drops. Rather, we should be wasting it all for Him. He is worthy! Mary of Bethany’s life echoes the reality of the worthiness of Jesus! May our lives carry the same echo proclaiming His worthiness.

Challenge:

Live your life loving Jesus while proclaiming the Gospel to others. Who can you share the Good News with today?
