Day 6 - Set
Meg Cooke
Ready, set, go…
To be ‘set’ is to bring something into a specified state or position. It is the point in the journey where we bring all of our preparation for the journey into the place where it is ready to go.
There are various points in our journey with God where we find ourselves in the space between what was, and what will be. It’s perhaps the point in the journey which requires the least intensive effort on our part: we’ve gotten ready for the new season and we are simply waiting for it to start. It is also, perhaps, the most vulnerable part of the journey we find ourselves in.
You may experience the exhilarating feeling of joy but you may also feel fear. Both feelings are normal, but the latter has the power to take us out of the race at the last moment.
See Adam and Eve, for example. God had prepared them to live a completely perfect life. They were about to ‘go’ but in preparing to do so, succumbed to doubt, ate from the tree and, well, we are living in the consequences of that to this day.
Doubt is tricky, because it presents itself as fear and we don’t realise we are doubting!
So, what is the promise we rely on in overcoming doubt at the crucial moment before we go? See Paul’s teaching in
Philippians 4:11-13 (AMP):
“Not that I speak from [any personal] need, for I have learned to be content [and self-sufficient through Christ, satisfied to the point where I am not disturbed or uneasy] regardless of my circumstances. I know how to get along and live humbly [in difficult times], and I also know how to enjoy abundance and live in prosperity. In any and every circumstance I have learned the secret [of facing life], whether well-fed or going hungry, whether having an abundance or being in need. I can do all things [which He has called me to do] through Him who strengthens and empowers me [to fulfill His purpose—I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency; I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him who infuses me with inner strength and confident peace].
God doesn’t promise that we won’t experience difficulty. He also doesn’t promise that we won’t experience the abundance of his goodness. In reality, we will experience both.
The promise is contentment whatever the circumstances and all the strength we need to overcome the challenges that might face us.
Consider:- What doubts do you have about God that present themselves as fear in your life? As you get ‘set’ for the Cave what doubts do you need to surrender to God?
Memorise:- Philippians 4:11-13.
