The cross did not surprise Jesus. It was all a part of God's master plan. God knew Jesus would have to die. He also knew Jesus would rise again? What does His rising from the dead mean for us today?
Through Jesus' death, my sins can and will be forgiven.
It means my current life can be shaped and changed for God's purposes. I can find help from God in the middle of life right now.
It also means that I do not have to fear death. Because Jesus rose from the dead He promised me life in His heaven. He has promised all of His church that one day He will raise all of His people.
