The apostles walked closely with Jesus during His life and ministry on Earth. These guys were His inner circle—the twelve closest people to Him during the years He showed who God is, served others, and shared the message of salvation with the world. They saw everything He did. Every miracle, every sermon, every message, every interaction, every experience—these guys had a front-row seat to all of it. So, it would be easy to assume they never struggled in faith. Why would they if they learned everything they know about it from walking so closely with the One who it’s based on? Of course, it’s important to remember that, like us, these guys were human. That means they were going to struggle, they weren’t always going to get it right, they were going to doubt, and they were going to need help to see their faith grow. When they felt that way, where did they turn? To the Lord Himself!
Their prayers for an increase in faith show us just how much the apostles understood about Jesus and what He could do for them. They wanted to see their faith increase because of their experiences with Him, and their prayers recorded in Luke reflect just that. This week, use this verse as a prayer in your own life. Where are you struggling to see your faith grow? Use the apostles’ words as your own in prayer over that, asking for the Lord to increase your faith in that specific part of your life.

We’re told to have faith that certain things will happen, to put our faith in ourselves, to keep the faith, to be faithful. But while phrases like that get tossed around in our vocabulary all the time, have you ever stopped to wonder what faith is really all about? At its core, faith is all trust, hope, and confidence. In this devotional, we’ll look at how putting our faith in Jesus shapes the way we live.
